New show aims to boost year-round visitor numbers at popular Dorset tourist spot

LCI Productions, a leading multimedia show design and production company, has created the UK’s first permanently installed outdoor 3D projection-mapped show for a popular Dorset resort.

Located opposite Boscombe’s Sovereign Shopping Centre, the new show will run each evening, with content updates throughout the year.

The Bournemouth Coastal BID initiative, in partnership with Bournemouth Towns Fund, is part of a wider mission to increase year-round visitors to the town. Particular focuses include promoting Boscombe’s off-season months, persuading visitors to stay longer and encouraging local people to explore more of the nearby coastal region.

Behind the illusion

A Digital Projection M-Vision 23000-WU DPL projector illuminates the brand new 18-metre by 11-metre show. The device is positioned in an adjacent elevated space to ensure perfect alignment and safety from unpredictable weather conditions.

The projector is synced with a Show Control Computer and BrightSign Media Player, making sure the content runs smoothly each evening, with the LCI team retaining remote dial-in capability as required. Eight speakers surround the building facade, creating a multisensory experience for guests.

The new installation opened with a ‘Love Boscombe’ theme on 14 February 2022 for Valentine’s Day. The 3D content “floats” above the surface, featuring hearts that pulsate, spin and loop around the building, incorporating images that represent Boscombe’s seafront and artwork from local residents, all brought to life on the High Street.

Bournemouth Coastal BID Manager Fiona McArthur says, “We have futureproofed this experience so that the content and show can regularly be updated. We have different shows planned throughout the year and also have the capability of showing live sport, so we can project it onto the side of the building.

“This has allowed us to create a multifunctional space and invite people throughout the year to come along and have a memorable experience.”

Rob Paul of LCI Projections adds, “This project is an example of retailtainment at its finest. We have created a guest experience that is akin to what you would expect to experience at a theme park, with the combination of 3D visuals and surround audio immersing the audience into the scene.

“This is a fantastic initiative to encourage people to visit their local high street and the evolving show experience will keep them returning time and time again.”

Last year, Alton Towers enlisted LCI Productions to assist with the renewal of its iconic Leap Frog fountains, found in the entrance area of the park.
