Japanese art collective teamLab has revealed the design for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, a permanent venue for immersive digital art on Saadiyat Island.
teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will be a “home for infinity curiosity”, according to a news release. It will feature art installations that are unique to Abu Dhabi and explore teamLab’s new concept of “environmental phenomena”.
To develop the attraction, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has partnered with Miral. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi joins the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, as well as the upcoming Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
Immersive art experiences from teamLab

“Sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature and high-tech fantasy, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer a world of boundless wonder and creativity to all who visit, encouraging the new perspectives that are so essential to a thriving future,” says Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi.
“Adding yet another outstanding experience to our world-leading cultural destination, the teamLab Phenomena experience will be unique to Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the emirate’s position as a destination of distinction.”
Founded by Toshiyuki Inoko, teamLab is a global group of artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, architects and mathematicians.
Visitors at teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi “will be immersed into a world that organically changes and evolves through the participation and actions of the people in it”, says Inoko.
Construction to be completed in 2024

“teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is based on teamLab’s new concept in which the existence of the artworks are created by the phenomena produced by their environment,” he adds.
“The artworks in teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi do not exist independently but are created by the environment which produces the various phenomena.”
teamLab has permanent venues in Shanghai, Tokyo and Macao. teamLab Borderless first opened in Tokyo in June 2018 and was followed by a teamLab Borderless in Shanghai.
teamLab Borderless Jeddah is launching in Saudi Arabia by 2023.
