Kennywood has reopened its classic Kangaroo ride following an extensive restoration project. The historic attraction made its debut at Kennywood back in 1962.

Kangaroo’s creator, John Norman Bartlett dubbed the ride a ‘flying coaster’ due to a single steep ramp that offers a feeling of weightlessness. In 1974, it inspired Kennywood’s first mascot – Kenny Kangaroo.

“Kangaroo is a one-of-a-kind ride perfect for a one-of-a-kind park like Kennywood,” said the park’s general manager Mark Pauls.

“Our multi-season celebration of 125 years of fun centers around Kangaroo and the many other unique pieces that have made Kennywood Pittsburgh’s playground for 12-plus decades.”

Historic attraction returns to Kennywood

Kangaroo, which was retired in 2020, has been refurbished and now features rainbow-coloured cars, a massive backdrop that includes LED lights, and state-of-the-art operating systems.

“We heard our guests ask for its return, and we are excited to bring the last ride of its kind in the world back, better than ever,” Pauls said in a previous statement.

“With its spectacular new backdrop, the Kangaroo looks better than ever and will soon be ready to bring its family-friendly thrills and excitement back to Kennywood,” Rob Henninger, assistant general manager, said in March.

Founded as a trolley park in 1898, Kennywood is a theme park near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Kennywood is owned and operated by Parques Reunidos.

Elsewhere, Carters Steam Fair is looking for a new owner and permanent home after touring its classic rides and vehicles around the UK for the last 45 years.
