Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg, described it as “one of the most intense VR experiences in the world”.

Liseberg, an amusement park in Sweden, is adding virtual reality (VR) to its drop tower ride AtmosFear. Europe’s highest free-fall ride will open as AtmosFear VR on 23 April.

AtmosFear, which opened in 2011, is operating as a temporary VR attraction until the park’s wooden roller coaster, Balder, reopens this summer after closing for track upgrades.

“It will be one of the most intense VR experiences in the world,” said Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.

“In a sci-fi version of Liseberg, you travel from AtmosFear’s station through wormholes and galaxies before being dropped almost 100 meters at 110 km/h under attack by robots.”

The virtual world for AtmosFear VR has been developed by VR Coaster alongside Quarryfold Studios. VR is combined with the physical ride to create a unique experience.

“We know that there are many guests who will miss Balder in the first months of the summer season,” Andersen added.

“That is why we are opening Atmosfear VR as a worthy, temporary, replacement.”

In addition, Liseberg is developing a new themed area called Luna Park with three new attractions – the family-friendly Turbo and Tempus rides and the Luna roller coaster.

The first phase of Liseberg’s â‚¬10m Luna Park, including Turbo and Tempus, is opening on 23 April. Luna, a Vekoma Family Boomerang coaster, is set to launch later in 2023.

Also making its debut as part of Liseberg’s 100th anniversary in 2023 is the Liseberg Grand Curiosa Hotel, which will be followed by the launch of the €110m Oceana Water World in 2024.

AtmosFear VR also launches on 23 April when Liseberg reopens for the 2022 season. The ride is included in the regular ticket price.
