Universal Beijing names Joe Hoskin as executive VP, general manager

Tom Mehrmann will start a new job at Universal Parks & Resorts as president and chief operating officer of Pacific Rim.

Universal Parks & Resorts has appointed Joe Hoskin as executive vice president and general manager of Universal Beijing Resort (UBR). Hoskin will lead UBR through its next phase of growth.

As previously revealed, Tom Mehrmann is starting a new role at Universal Parks & Resorts as president and chief operating officer of Pacific Rim. He recently served as president of Universal Beijing.

Mehrmann will continue to oversee the resort, as well as Universal’s theme parks in Japan and Hollywood. Since 2017, he has taken Universal Beijing through its development and opening.

“Tom Mehrmann brought visionary leadership and decades of experience to the successful development and grand opening of Universal Beijing Resort,” said Page Thompson, president and chief operating officer, international, at Universal Parks & Resorts.

“His new role allows him to build on that experience as we continue to develop a shared, best-practice approach toward creating our world-class guest experiences,” Thompson added.

Hoskin previously worked as senior vice president of human resources, international, at Universal Parks & Resorts. He worked with UBR to recruit and train employees across the destination.

Hoskin has decades of experience working for global multinational companies in China. He is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. In his new role, he will report to Mehrmann.

“Joe’s leadership in helping us recruit and train an incredible team for Universal Beijing Resort has been vital to our success,” Thompson said. “His unique understanding of Universal Beijing Resort perfectly positions him to take us into the future.”

UBR’s next phase of growth

Universal Beijing is already planning its second phase of construction. The expansion will add 2.2 square kilometres of space to Universal Beijing and includes five hotels.

Universal Orlando president Bill Davis is also set to retire after 15 years, with Universal Studios Hollywood’s president Karen Irwin taking over on January 1, 2022.

Tom Williams is retiring as chairman and CEO of Universal Parks & Resorts next year. He will be replaced by Universal Creative’s Mark Woodbury, with Michael Hightower taking over as president of Universal Creative.
