Universal Studios Japan has introduced a wearable navigation device for guests who are blind or have low vision.

Universal Studios Japan has introduced a new wearable navigation device for guests who are blind or have low vision.

Universal Destinations & Experiences said the new service marks the first time this technology has been used at a theme park in Japan.

The wearable device is worn on the shoe and provides direction cues through foot vibrations, rather than audio or screens.

This allows visitors "to move through the park more intuitively and independently", Universal said.

According to local media reports, the device is connected to an app on guests' smartphones and is available rent for 1,000 yen ($6) per day.

The technology was first tested at the park in May by guests with guide dogs.

Last year, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London –The Making of Harry Potter introduced tactile tours for visitors with sight loss in partnership with UK charity Guide Dogs.

As part of the collaboration, dubbed 'Dogwarts', the studio tour sponsored three guide dogs in training – black Labrador Harry, yellow Labrador Ron, and Golden Retriever Hermione.

Attractions accessibility

Returning to Universal Studios Japan, the park recently revealed plans for new Pokémon experiences, which will then be introduced to Universal's parks across the world.

Opened in 2001, Universal Studios Japan is based in Osaka. It features all the Universal favourites, including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park, Jurassic Park and Amity Village.

In addition, Super Nintendo World opened at the park in March 2020. It was the first of four Nintendo expansions in Japan, Singapore, Orlando and Hollywood.
