The exhibition coincides with the 15th anniversary of the Shaun the Sheep television series

Aardman, the award-winning UK studio, will soon open a new touring display, Shaun the Sheep Exhibition, at Museum of Art “Eki” KYOTO from 30 July 2022. Licensed through Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, the commemorative exhibition provides guests with an opportunity to examine the world from the series.

Animation fans will discover the production process of Shaun the Sheep with an array of sets and storyboards on display, used in films and marketing. With each animator shooting just twenty seconds of animation per week, visitors will discover the meticulous work that goes into each Aardman production. The exhibition is home to a collection of items that showcases the passionate work that goes into creating these films.

Skill and talent

Aardman creative director Richard Starzak says: “I am very excited to see this exhibition come together to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Shaun the Sheep. It reveals the many skills and talents needed to make stop-frame films, and the various crafts that add so much to a good story.”

This December, the animated film Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas will debut in Japan. The exhibition provides a sneak preview of scenes from the festive feature for this audience.

“Visitors will be able to see the Christmas market set from Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas for the very first time, and the film will be released in Japan later this year, so make sure to take a close look.”

Bringing Shaun home

A range of venue-exclusive merchandise available will be available including apparel and tote bags bearing original artwork alongside Hachimanya Isogoro mixed chilli powder spices, the first commercialised product of its type associated with Shaun the Sheep.

Starzak has also created an exclusive artwork set depicting Shaun and his pals filming a stop-motion animation film themselves. The illustrations will be on display at the exhibition and portrayed on an exclusive line of merchandise available exclusively at the venue.

“I hope visitors enjoy the exhibition and understand a little more about the amount of work and level of detail that goes into making Aardman’s unique and globally admired films,” adds Starzak.

The exhibition will be on display in Kyoto until 4 September 2022.

Aardman has also launched its first touring exhibition for North America, Shear Genius!, developed by the Minnesota Children’s Museum.
