Sandbox VR has partnered with Netflix to create a virtual reality (VR) experience inspired by Squid Game, the streaming giant’s most-watched show of all time.

The Squid Game VR experience is due to launch in late 2023. Players will find themselves in iconic locations from the Korean TV series, where they become contestants in challenges inspired by the survival drama.

Sandbox VR uses motion-tracking technology to capture the movements of a player’s entire body and a haptic system to provide realism and immersion. Guests use their own bodies as game controllers as they freely roam and explore virtual worlds.

“Our mission is to bring people closer together through world-class immersive experiences,” said Steve Zhao, founder and CEO of Sandbox VR.

“What could be a more perfect fit than Squid Game, the most widely shared and discussed television series of the past years.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to partner with Netflix to provide these fans the chance to transport themselves into the world of the show.”

Sandbox VR currently offers six experiences based on popular and original intellectual property (IP). These are developed by an in-house gaming studio led by game industry veterans.

Challenges from the Korean TV series

Headquartered in San Francisco, Sandbox VR is now operating in more than 30 global locations and expanding rapidly.

An experience based on Squid Game is already available at Immersive Gamebox venues in the US and UK. Players get to navigate challenges including ‘Red Light, Green Light’, ‘Marbles’, ‘Dalgona’, ‘Tug of War’, and ‘Glass Bridge’.

“People are constantly seeking new and different ways to remain invested in their favorite content,” said Will Dean, CEO of Immersive Gamebox (via THR).

“To reimagine Netflix’s most popular show in an entirely new format offers customers more ways to stay connected to Squid Game.”
