‘World of Studio Ghibli’ will be one of ArtScience Museum‘s most ambitious exhibitions

ArtScience Museum at the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort (IR) in Singapore is opening a major Studio Ghibli exhibition this year.

Described as one of ArtScience Museum’s largest and most ambitious exhibitions to date, the ‘World of Studio Ghibli’ will celebrate the Japanese animation studio’s works.

Opening in October, the immersive exhibition features large-scale, interactive, theatrical sets from throughout Studio Ghibli’s history, ArtScience Museum said in a press release.

Guests will meet some of their favourite characters and immerse themselves in the worlds of films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princes Mononoke and Spirited Away.

“For years, ArtScience Museum has been trying to bring a Studio Ghibli show to Singapore, and finally, here it is – the big one,” said Honor Harger, vice president of ArtScience Museum.

Studio Ghibli has created some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed animated films of all time. Their visually sumptuous films explore humanist topics like ecology and nature, and many feature diverse female characters who are strong, independent, complex, sensitively nuanced, and yet relatable.”

The pop-up exhibition took place in Thailand in 2023. Harger said the show is “likely to be one of the biggest in our history”.

Another Studio Ghibli exhibition has been announced for China. This is the result of a partnership between the animation studio and Chinese entertainment company Alibaba Pictures.

Opening in Shanghai later this year, the new exhibition will feature the works of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki

In more Ghibli news, Japan’s Ghibli Park is opening the Valley of Witches area in March. The park’s fifth and final area is based on anime films including Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle

Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands is to invest $750 million in the second phase of its redevelopment.
