Google Arts & Culture app lets users find their artwork lookalike

News
Google arts culture. App. Museums. Galleries.

A new app from Google allows users to browse exhibits and collections from museums around the world on their smartphone.

Google has collaborated with more than 1,200 international museums, galleries and institutions from 70 countries to make their exhibits available for everyone online. The app, Google Arts & Culture, can help people find nearby museums, lets them take virtual tours of exhibits, has a variety of browsing options and a virtual reality mode.

It also includes an “Art Recogniser” which uses the devices camera to recognise an artwork and provides more details about it.

A feature of the app that has proved popular on social media is the ability to use a picture of yourself to find a piece of artwork that looks like you. After you take a picture of yourself the app uses computer vision technology to analyse your features and match your selfie with historical artwork.

Once you have been matched with a piece of art you can click on the picture to learn more details, including its artist and the collection it’s from.

The app is available for download from the Google Play store. For more details, view the promotional video below.
