Museum Store Sunday is celebrating five years on November 28, providing support to cultural institutions at Christmas.

The Museum Store Association is celebrating five years of Museum Store Sunday on November 28, providing support to cultural institutions during the holiday season.

This year, Museum Store Sunday is taking place at 1,700 museum shops across 24 countries, and at museums representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

As global museums recover from extended closures due to Covid-19, Museum Store Sunday aims to generate revenue for participating institutions and invites the public to contribute.

“Museum Store Sunday celebrates a milestone anniversary during a time when museums are in critical need of community support,” said Laura Lott, president and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums.

Supporting local institutions

“While this holiday season looks different for everyone, there is a unique opportunity to shop locally at your community’s museum store or virtually around the world while supporting museums’ vital work.”

The shopping event can be accessed in-person or online, with creative and inspiring gifts available for all ages. Customers buying products from museum stores help support small businesses, independent suppliers and artisan creators.

The Museum Store Association said proceeds directly support the museums and help arts, cultural and nonprofit attractions to continue educating and growing.

Many of the participating museum shops will offer discounts, in-store and virtual events, gifts with purchase, and online shopping to mark Museum Store Sunday.

1,700 museum shops

Last year’s Museum Store Sunday involved more than 1,400 museum stores. The campaign occurs annually on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

The Museum Store Association is an international organisation aiming to advance the nonprofit retail industry and museum stores.
