Horizon of Khufu, a new virtual reality (VR) expedition through ancient Egypt, has opened at Westfield Stratford City in London.
The immersive experience uncovers 1,000 square metres of ancient ruins and takes guests to the Great Pyramid of Giza, and on a boat trip on the Nile to attend the funeral of Khufu, the first pharaoh to build a pyramid at Giza.
Travellers are led by a virtual guide named Mona who unveils Khufu’s ancient secrets. They also see ancient burial chambers and witness mummification ceremonies.
The VR adventure was developed by Emissive’s VR studio Excurio in partnership with leading Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian from Harvard University. Using archaeological and historical data, the team has recreated an ancient civilisation built 4,000 years ago.
Horizon of Khufu opened in London after successful runs in France and China. Fabien Barati, managing director of Emissive, said the VR experience “enables people to travel through time and witness a wonder of the world, right on their doorstep”.
“Horizon of Khufu has been so well received across the globe and we hope Londoners of all ages will be captivated by this once-in-a-lifetime journey,” Barati added.
