Merlin has saved enough energy to power 8,000+ London Eye rotations

Merlin Entertainments has revealed it invested £2 million into a total of 50 green energy projects at its global attractions this year.

Through these projects, Merlin has delivered annual energy savings of 3,924 MWh, equivalent to powering 8,077 spins of its iconic London Eye attraction.

Per a press release, these initiatives reflect Merlin‘s focus on long-term energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and creating economic benefits for local businesses and communities.

“The progress we have made this year demonstrates Merlin’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a more sustainable future,” said Dare Ilori, group sustainability director at Merlin.

Key projects from 2024 include upgrades to LED lighting systems at Gardaland Resort, resulting in substantial energy savings while enhancing the visitor experience.

At Sea Life Charlotte-Concord, Merlin has installed a new pump system to improve energy efficiency and reduce noise levels, thus creating a quieter and more comfortable environment for the marine animals.

Elsewhere, Legoland Korea has adopted on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) installations to generate renewable energy and reduce the resort’s reliance on traditional energy sources.

“From solar panels in Korea to quieter systems for marine life in North America, every project reflects our passion for innovation and care for the planet,” Ilori added.

Sustainable change at Merlin

“We’re proud of the strides we’ve made and excited to continue creating positive change through our attractions worldwide in 2025 and beyond.”

In April, Ilori took part in the greenloop sustainability conference – his third appearance at the annual event for the attractions sector.

“When people say to me challenges, I say opportunities,” he told blooloop.

“I say that challenges are opportunities – I call them solution opportunities. It’s an ability to look at these and say, okay, how can we do this?”

Earlier this month, Merlin unveiled some of its new accessibility projects, which include a sensory room and a descriptive audio tour.
