Fresh theme parks and waterparks are expected across Cuba as the country’s Tourism Ministry seeks foreign investment in tourism.

Reinaldo Daniel Alonso, director of Development, Investment and Business, told reporters recently some 140 new projects could be included in an updated investment portfolio the government plans to unveil at this November’s Havana International Fair.

As well as building new amusement parks and golf courses, expanding the island’s hotel capacity is a major goal. The government’s Tourism Development Plan aims to increase the nation’s total number of hotel rooms from 67,000 to 103,000.

Tourism arrivals have increased in Cuba following the restoration of ties with the United States under former President Barack Obama. There were 14.5% more international visitors in 2016 compared to 2015. This year, Cuban officials hope to welcome some 4.2 million tourists.
