New area themed to the “optimism and innovation of the late 1800s

Sweden’s Gröna Lund theme park has submitted the first planning applications for its new area, which is inspired by the 1897 Stockholm world’s fair.

For its upcoming area, Gröna Lund is expanding into a nearby parking lot. The site previously housed the Nöjesfältet amusement park, as well as the world’s fair in 1897.

The historical site will therefore be themed to the “optimism and innovation of the late 1800s”, Gröna Lund said in a press release.

“Gröna Lund’s new area will draw inspiration from the heydays of world’s fairs, primarily the Stockholm Exhibition that took place in the same location in 1897,” said Christer Fogelmarck, CEO of Parks and Resorts Scandinavia.

“The historical connection will influence the architecture, but we also want to embrace the positive spirit and inventiveness that characterized the era.”

At the 1897 Stockholm exhibition, visitors experienced technological innovations such as the automobile, electric lighting and moving pictures, as well as industrially produced foods like hotdogs and ice cream.

“Our vision is for the area to become an oasis of experiences, entertainment, food, and wondrous theming,” Fogelmarck added.

“We want to create a place where all guests can feel joy and optimism, something we need now more than ever.”

The first planning applications submitted for Gröna Lund‘s new area are for the perimeter buildings, which will borrow architectural elements from nearby historical buildings.

Located on the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, Gröna Lund is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. It is home to 30 attractions, including Monster – King of Roller Coasters, an inverted steel coaster by B&M that debuted in 2021.

The park, which welcomes more than 1 million guests every year, also offers a wide range of entertainment experiences.
