Plans for a $12m, 120-bedroom hotel at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the UK were lodged with the local council last week, as the park closed its Wild Mouse roller coaster.
The proposed five-story facility includes a conference centre and would see the neighbouring Coasters Diner redeveloped to serve as a restaurant and bar for the hotel. Rooms would have views of the sea or the park.
The plans, designed by architecture firm Alison Pike, state that the hotel “will achieve a huge improvement to the visual appearance of this prominent corner site on the edge of the Pleasure Beach”.
Wild Mouse ride closes
Blackpool Pleasure Beach has also announced that its Wild Mouse ride has been permanently closed. The wooden roller coaster had been in operation since 1958 and was one of four Wild Mouse coasters remaining in the world. The theme park has removed the facade from its former Trauma Towers attraction as well.
In a statement, Blackpool Pleasure Beach said that the decisions were made to create space for future developments.
The statement added: “Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a constantly evolving amusement park and has been for the past 122 years. The changes it has seen over the years are what has made it the great park it is today. This, coupled with a relatively small amount of space, means that in order to progress and look to the future we occasionally need to alter the landscape of the park to make way for future developments.”
The Pleasure Beach is due to open a new double launch coaster in Spring this year called Icon. Featuring 1.14km of track, it will have a maximum height of 27m (88.5ft) and will interact with other rides at the park 15 times. The top speed will be 80km/h (55mph) and maximum acceleration 4.3G.
