RWS 2.0 will begin in Q2 2022 with the expansion of Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium.

Genting Singapore’s $4.5bn expansion of Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) will begin in the second quarter of this year with an initial investment of S$400m ($300m). The first phase includes expanding Universal Studios Singapore.

Resorts World Sentosa’s expansion, named RWS 2.0, will begin in Q2 2022. The project will start with the expansion of Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium, which will be enhanced and rebranded as the Singapore Oceanarium.

“With our upcoming RWS 2.0 developments, we are confident that RWS will be well-positioned to lead the recovery of Singapore’s tourism as borders gradually reopen,” said RWS CEO Tan Hee Teck. “We are excited to welcome the return of more international travellers with an even more vibrant RWS in the near future.”

Universal Studios Singapore will feature the new Minion Land, home to multiple rides including Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, an immersive motion-simulator 3D ride featuring a realistic projection system.

The Singapore Oceanarium will be three times the size of the current S.E.A. Aquarium, with state-of-the-art technology, immersive exhibits and multi-sensory zones. It will also feature a research and learning centre with learning labs, workspaces, seminar rooms and a rooftop event space.

In addition, RWS is renovating three of its hotels – the Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and Festive Hotel. The refurbishment works will be carried out in phases from the second quarter of this year through 2023.

“RWS’s vision for the next decade is to become a sustainable and innovative top tourism destination in line with the Singapore Green Plan,” he added. “As we begin construction works on our expansion, we continue to pursue a holistic approach to destination building.

“We are acutely aware of the need to embody into our designs a more sustainable environment, and are engaging various stakeholders and consultants to incorporate the latest technology and research into our developments to achieve this goal.”
