Toverland announces details of upgrade to Expedition Zork whitewater course

Zork Toverland

Refresh will see a deeper storyline, new theming and an interactive marble run

Toverland, the popular Netherlands amusement park, will be updating Expedition Zork this winter, giving the 17-year-old attraction a new storyline and extensive new theming. This includes the addition of an interactive marble run. The refreshed attraction is set to open in Spring 2022.

Expedition Zork is located inside the park’s indoor themed area, Wunderwalkd, which has itself undergone some restyling in recent years.

“Toverland’s quality standard is getting higher and higher and we think it is very important that our older theme areas are also included in this,” says Jean Gelissen Jr., Toverland general manager. “Even in this special time, we want to continue to invest and right now, the renewal of Expedition Zork fits best with our strategy.”

Revealing the story of Zork

The work to upgrade the ride will include going more in-depth into the story behind it. The wild water rapids currently feature Zork, a green swamp creature, yet the park has not really explained or explored the story behind this mysterious character before.

“In the new story of Expedition Zork, we have connected all existing elements of the Wunderwald,” says Peter van Holsteijn, senior designer.  An Alpine village, an eccentric inventor, a log flume and an unknown mountain monster.”

With this attraction, guests enter a transport system, created by the character of Maximus Müller, an investor who is on the hunt for the mythical creature Zork. Along the way, they will discover whether Zork is a creature to be feared, or if the reality is something different. “With this, all the puzzle pieces fall into place,” adds van Holsteijn.

Maximus’ Wunderball

A new addition will be the interactive marble run, Maximus’ Wunderball. Guest will be able to buy wooden Toverland balls, and can then roll these through the giant track as many times as they like. The track features two different courses, totalling 125 metres in length.

Construction will begin after the Christmas holidays, with an expected opening in Spring 2022. As the ride takes shape, guests can peep into Maximus’ office to see how his drawings of the project are progressing. While the ride is closed, Toverland will offer Dwierwind, a spinning coaster, as an alternative attraction.

Earlier this year, Toverland presented new thrills for Halloween, including 20 scare actors, five scare zones, haunted houses and a maze.
