Wearable theme park map could offer special effects

Universal Destinations & Experiences has filed a patent application for a wearable device that serves as an interactive way-finder.

The patent application for an ‘interactive way-finder’ describes a wearable with “device communications circuitry and a display that displays one or more hands pointing in the direction of a destination based on proximity information received from communications circuitry of a destination”.

The destination is “represented on the display”, the patent application adds. The destination could be an attraction or restaurant, or an exit or restrooms.

“The destination may be selected based on user input, on location of the interactive way-finder system in the amusement park, or based on a user profile,” the filing says.

Personalised recommendations at parks

As for the device’s interactive features, it may enable special effects at the destination, or feature onboard effects.

Using the device, visitors could choose where they want to go, or the system could suggest destinations based on personalised recommendations.

“The interactive way-finder device may be capable of operating in several different modes,” the new patent adds.

One mode could provide information and directions for attractions, another could focus on personalised dining recommendations within a theme park.

Universal regularly files patent applications. A recent filing was for technology that could generate realistic images at theme parks using “retroreflection”.

Another Universal filing describes a technology to improve virtual reality (VR) rides at its theme parks by including physical reactions in a virtual world.

Other recent filings include a patent for a wearable to enhance interactive experiences, and technology that could improve augmented reality (AR) experiences in theme parks.

Some of these new technologies could be used in Universal Orlando’s new fourth theme park, Epic Universe, which is on track to open in 2025.

Epic Universe will “present a level of theme park immersion that is unmatched”, Universal says.
