WhiteWater, a leading waterpark manufacturer, collaborated with Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina, to introduce a new Super Flume experience, Rip Roarin' Falls.
Many water rides are being decommissioned, largely due to their age and the maintenance required. However, guests have been demanding their return. When Carowinds surveyed its guests, the results showed that a flume ride was the number-one attraction they wanted to see again.
Working alongside WhiteWater’s designers and engineers, the park has now added a reimagined version that integrates new technology, sets three world records, offers greater accessibility, and tells a story.
A record-breaking ride
The iconic splashdown at the end of a log flume or Super Flume attraction generally has a height of 15 or 20 meters (49 to 65 feet).
However, Rip Roarin’ Falls demonstrates that the drop height and ride path need not be standardised, as it breaks the world record for the tallest water ride drop at 100 feet (30 meters) tall, reaching up to 50 mph (80 km/h)
It also features the world’s tallest reverse drop on a water ride, at 42 feet (13 meters) tall, and the world’s tallest reverse camelback drop on a water ride, with two backward moments.

A straightforward yet effective technology for enhancing the guest experience is the track switch, and Rip Roarin’ Falls features two types. The first is a rotary switch that quickly changes the vehicle’s direction and synchronises its movement with the narrative.
The second is a lateral track switch, running parallel to the main track and designed to facilitate the loading and unloading of guests with special mobility needs.
This setup ensures the flow of vehicles on the main track remains uninterrupted. Not only does this feature enhance Rip Roarin’ Falls' accessibility and ADA compliance, but it also gives these guests and their groups ample time to load and unload without drawing attention.
Improving the experience for both guests and operators
A common solution for securing riders is a ratcheting lap bar shared between two seats. Because it mechanically locks at set increments, it may not suit pairing riders of different sizes, such as a parent and child.
Rip Roarin' Falls has individual hydraulic lap bars designed for personalised comfort. Each rider receives a padded, adjustable bar that conforms to their body size, ensuring a secure fit whether sitting next to a larger or smaller person.
The bars include grips for smaller hands, helping riders self-soothe during intense sections. Additionally, an integrated knee restraint keeps single riders securely seated, preventing movement and allowing them to fully enjoy the ride.
When it comes to operations, to increase vehicle lifespan, WhiteWater’s water rides feature high-tech composite bodies made from corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel, marine-grade aluminium, marine-standard polyethene, and anti-corrosion coatings.

The boats are designed with easily interchangeable parts and commonly available components, allowing operators to maintain the rides without the delays associated with custom replacement parts.
Plus, each Super Flume boat features eight easily removable floor panels for quick maintenance access.
Immersive storytelling
In addition to the classic splashdown, water rides can also take guests on a story arc with a beginning, middle, and end. Recent improvements in theming and control systems enable water rides to deliver more immersive storytelling experiences than ever before.
Although the overall narrative is managed by the park, WhiteWater’s Water Rides team collaborates closely with clients to design boats that align with the theme, synchronise ride motion and speed with the story, and incorporate additional water features like geysers.
Rip Roarin’ Falls illustrates how attractions can evolve over time.
Through the collaboration between Carowinds and WhiteWater, the ride has been transformed with record-breaking thrills, improved accessibility, increased rider comfort, simpler maintenance, and more immersive storytelling.
As parks seek attractions that combine nostalgia with innovation, projects like this showcase WhiteWater's ability to revive timeless favourites.
Last month, WhiteWater was named a Canada’s Best Managed Companies Platinum Club member and received two awards at the MENALAC Awards 2026.
