In celebration of World Water Day (worldwaterday.org/) we would like to share with you one of Science North’s latest traveling exhibits.
WaterWorks: Soak Up the Science, starring Walter the Adventurous Water Molecule is a traveling exhibit that provides a unique, timely, and hands-on educational look at the playful, powerful and precious world of water. This 600 m2 (6, 000 sq. ft) traveling exhibit and multimedia experience involves audiences in gaining a better understanding of and appreciation for our most precious natural resource. Visitors explore the physical properties of water with exhibits on raindrops, rainbows and snowflakes. They learn how water ‘cycles’ from its source through various treatment processes and then to our taps. They also calculate their own water consumption and learn conservation strategies.
Here are some water conservation tips to help preserve both water and on your water bill at home!
•Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1, 000 gallons a month!
•Discover the world of ‘xeriscaping’ for your garden, an approach to low water usage and low-maintenance landscaping.
•Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.
•For cold drinks, keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap.
•Thinking about a new washing machine? Consider a super efficient washing machine that uses 12 to 18 gallons per load as opposed to older machines that use 44 gallons of water on average to wash one load.
•Switch to an ultra low-flow showerhead. This could save you as much as 2.5 gallons of water every minute you shower!
