The Los Angeles-based museum in California has received a series of technology upgrades

Electrosonic, a leading international audiovisual and technology services company, has detailed its latest work for a long-standing client that is designed to confront modern prejudices.

The Museum of Tolerance (MOT) is run as the educational component of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a globally recognised Jewish human rights organisation.

Electrosonic provided a range of services for the project including technology design consulting, build and system integration and AV & control systems design. The company was also responsible for technology master planning, project management, fabrication and system testing.

Each exhibit uses advanced technology and the modern gallery design carefully places devices flush into walls, ceilings or furniture to complement the museum experience.

Modernising an important topic

The new Social Lab experience is an advancement of the original Social Lab which was designed and installed in 1996 by Electrosonic. Its fifteen galleries tell stories in compelling ways, using innovative technology to inform and engage guests.

Following an introductory film, visitors come into contact with ‘Point of View’, a glass cube using rear projections to present parallel scenarios which reflect different perspectives on challenging conversations.

A large circular exhibit named The Forum follows, where visitors are given the opportunity to debate the top issues of the moment. Each of The Forum’s wings contains a large 100-point capability touchscreen for groups, as well as a high-res guide to the presentation. Next, they visit the ‘History Wall’ where 20 large touchscreens allow visitors to examine and dive deep into issues of tolerance and diversity from different periods.

Moving round to the Global Crisis exhibit, guests interact with tables comprising twelve individual touchscreens. Media is also rear-projected onto a central glass screen on each table, creating a dynamic experience demonstrating how world leaders deal with crisis management.

“We are so proud”

Transparent veils made of metal coils are scattered throughout Social Lab, acting as exhibit dividers and video projection backdrops. Working closely with Smart Monkeys, Electrosonic implemented the firm’s ISAAC platform to host control, monitoring, user and content management systems through a virtualised platform.

An Electrosonic representative says: “The Social Lab uses innovative technology in a powerful way to tell compelling stories in a format that is familiar and relevant to a digital generation. Interaction, debate and collaboration are at the heart of the exhibition as it uses technology in every exhibit to engage visitors and influence hearts and minds. Delivering the Museum’s creative vision required high levels of collaboration between project partners and the ability to fuse architecture, storytelling and technology.”

Chief financial officer, chief administrative officer and director of project developments of Simon Wiesenthal Center, Susan Burden, adds: Electrosonic never disappoints us when it comes to designing and delivering the best audiovisual experience at the Museum of Tolerance. We are so proud to have them on our team.”

Electrosonic will be exhibiting at the 2022 AAM Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo this week, which will be the first non-virtual Annual Meeting since 2019.
