Charles Sainsbury from the Eden Project will speak at greenloop 2023.
Blooloop is hosting the third greenloop sustainability in visitor attractions conference from 25 to 26 April, online. This unique cross-sector event brings together leading sustainability professionals from the world’s major museums, theme parks, zoos and other visitor attractions. They will share strategy insights and lessons learned to inspire us all to become more sustainable in our businesses and help protect the planet.
Speakers announced to date include WAZA, Disney, Merlin, the Science Museum of Minnesota, Ecomusée Tata Somba, Efteling, PortAventura, Museums Galleries Scotland, Two Oceans Aquarium, Just Stop Oil, Meow Wolf and more.
The Eden Project

The Eden Project has been a leader in sustainable visitor attractions, since it first opened its iconic biomes in a disused Cornish clay pit in 2001. Launched in 2014, Eden Project International aims to deliver social and ecological benefits to new Edens and Wild Sites at locations around the world.
UK locations for new Edens include Dundee, Morecambe, Derry and Dorset. The Eden Project is also heading to the US, China, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia and Costa Rica.
Charles Sainsbury is Energy and Sustainability Manager for the Eden Project, responsible for delivering its regenerative sustainability approach both at Eden Project Cornwall and in the design and construction of future Eden Projects.

Prior to joining the organisation in 2019, Sainsbury’s experience spanned a number of energy and sustainability focussed roles in commercial property management and construction. He is an Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) lead assessor and Board Director at the Energy Managers Association (EMA).
Charles says, “I’m a passionate environmentalist who remains eternally optimistic that change is possible. So, working for an organisation that is committed to demonstrating bold and innovative solutions – and in a role responsible for driving this change across our teams and projects – feels like a privilege…
My most memorable moment so far has been witnessing Eden Geothermal come to life – we began drilling the first well in May 2021. It will be a game changer for Eden and pave the way for a new renewables industry in the UK.
With so many exciting plans in the pipeline both here in Cornwall and further afield with our New Edens, I think we have all the building blocks to develop a blueprint for regenerative business, whereby we actively do more good, not just less harm. Our ambition is to operate sites which deliver net positive outcomes and become demonstrators of truly sustainable and circular systems, inspiring our visitors in an educational and fun way. It doesn’t get more powerful than that!”
Charles will speak about green energy solutions for visitor attractions, drawing on his experience with Eden, both in Cornwall and at Eden’s new sites.
He joins Jaap den Bleker from Efteling in a session focussing on green energy, at 12pm BST on the 25 April.
Why should you attend greenloop?
With all visitor attractions needing to decarbonise and become more sustainable, greenloop will provide practical, actionable advice and case studies for our attendees, with take-aways that they can put into practice, as well as inspirational insights from industry leaders.
When it comes to solving really big challenges, like how do we build sustainable theme parks, resorts and cruise ships around the world, it takes all of us and all of these different industries coming together. And that’s what’s great about greenloop … our collaboration is key to really think about how we build sustainable themed entertainment experiences.
Emily Dow, Design Studio Executive with Walt Disney Imagineering at greenloop 2021

greenloop aims to connect sustainability leaders from across the attractions industry to enable us to move more quickly towards a more sustainable future.
greenloop is a must-attend event, crossing boundaries to bring together really thought-provoking insights and ideas around the way visitor attractions can not only minimise their environmental impact on the planet, but also act as catalysts for positive change. I cannot think of another event which goes near greenloop as a concentrated dollop of practical green inspiration – a must-attend for several of our team.
Dominic Hare, CEO Blenheim
