Global exhibition utilises tech firm’s advanced projection technology

Christie, the global visual and audio technology company and official projection and display partner for Expo 2020 Dubai, has announced that its products have supported shows watched by millions following an extravagant opening ceremony.

The company’s technology displays content and provides experiences across the event site which has over 3,000,000 visits registered across 185 different nationalities, over 2,000,000 of whom visited in the first month.

A global audience watched Expo 2020 Dubai’s opening ceremony on-site and online, with 1,000 cast and crew members putting together an extraordinary performance. The 90-minute technologically-advanced spectacular showcased Al Wasl Plaza’s incredible dome, now the world’s largest 360° projection surface. Featuring 252 Christie D4K40-RGB RGB pure laser projectors, the immersive experience is described as an “unprecedented feat of engineering”.

Christie’s director of sales, EMEA Entertainment, Joe Graziano, says: “We are extremely proud to be involved in such an important global event as Expo 2020 Dubai. As the official projection and display partner, we are delighted with the early success of the event and look forward to our projectors helping to create memories for visitors to Expo from across the globe.”

Beating heart of the site

The Al Wasl dome has been described by organisers as “the beating heart of Expo 2020”, and Creative Technology Middle East was the AV integrator for the venue.

With the teams collaborating closely through the design, supply and installation process, projectors have been strategically placed in pods around the inside perimeter of the dome. The 130-metre-wide spherical projection surface can be viewed by guests both inside and outside the venue.

Creative Technology Middle East MD Andy Reardon, adds, “It is an honour to have been selected by Expo 2020 as the AV integrator for this one-of-a-kind installation. It has been a pleasure working alongside the team at Christie over the past few years and using their technology to bring the world’s largest 360-degree projection mapping project to life. I look forward to working with them again in the future.”

Sustainability has been a hot topic at this year’s expo, with the recent release of an Expo sustainability report looking at consumption and habitats, and the introduction of Terra, a pavilion dedicated to the subject.

Christie takes this matter into consideration by utilising a reduced power output for the energy-efficient operation of its projectors at the show, whilst still delivering rich, crisp visuals that do not compromise on image quality.

Christie will be also providing technical support and service response through its own Network Operations Centre.

Expo 2020 Dubai continues with over 200 pavilions, daily events, panel discussions and cultural performances for visitors until the festival concludes 31 March 2022.

Christie recently revealed its new commercial UV disinfection products range, Christie CounterAct, will be mass-produced featuring patented Care222 far-UVC light technology.
