Audiovisuals, or AV, refers to media which is both heard and seen. The term is also often used to describe the equipment and technology which produces this media. AV experiences are widespread and accessible, with advertising, education, and entertainment among some of the applications of this technology.
AV applications in the attractions industry are evolving quickly. With extensive options for projectors, amplifiers, screens and specialised equipment available, it is possible to use AV in any venue or environment. While often used to create immersive experiences, it is also often used for operational requirements such as signage, interpretation, and accessibility features.
Projection is a widely accessible AV medium used for an enormous range of applications, both indoors and out. Light installations with accompanying musical scores are regularly presented on the exteriors of landmarks and heritage properties, for special events and national celebrations.
In contrast, projectors are also available which can present AV media in small interior spaces, offering flexibility for venues.
Additionally, projection mapping enables AV media to display effectively on unusual or complex surfaces, which can bring a wide range of structures to life in new ways. This technology enables producers to use art installations to reanimate heritage buildings, and to deliver interpretation in innovative ways within exhibition spaces.
Increasingly, drones are also used to spectacular effect and are often used together with lighting effects or fireworks for emotive storytelling. Ground-breaking drone shows have been developed for attractions such as Disneyland Paris, Dollywood, and events including the Olympics opening ceremony have presented ground-breaking drone shows.
LED screens also offer extraordinarily creative options for AV media. Sphere in Las Vegas features the world’s highest resolution LED screen accompanied by an immersive sound system which uses 167,000 channels of amplification, providing an extraordinary AV experience for 10,000 guests.
