The Riyadh stadium is benefitting from a new lighting package

Painting with Light (PWL), a lighting and multimedia expert, is celebrating a successful stadium lighting project in KSA.

In September 2020, Saudi Media Company won the media rights for the Mrsool Park stadium with a strategy to transform the site into a year-round sports and entertainment venue. SMC chose Rayon as its lighting partner to revamp the entire lighting of the stadium.

Rayon then called on PWL to control and programme the stadium lighting, to enable dynamic light shows for fans at the stadium. The result is spectacular show lighting that dances along to the music, suitable for various sports events.

Meeting high standards

During the project, the pre-existing static stadium lighting had to be replaced with dynamic light shows following FIFA 2020 and AFC 2021 standard lighting rules. Rayon selected PWL as an experienced partner to provide the whole control system as well as visualising and programming the light shows.

PWL chose a DMX smart lighting management system, which provides variable lighting control and allows the stadium’s atmosphere to be adjusted depending on the sport or event. PWL provided the server rack and was in charge of all stadium control and programming. The illumination is now made up of a mix of white and RGB luminaires, replacing the prior lighting in place.

Before physical work on the concept began, the proposed scheme was visualised with a realistic animation (above). The buyer supplied the desired music playlist, and PWL pre-programmed everything from their base in Genk, Belgium. Should clients provide feedback based on pre-visualizations, the lighting sequences can be tailored to their preferences. The programming was imported into the control system and final fine-tuning was performed on-site in Riyad.

Synchronised performances

The Pharos system was chosen to control the general lighting, which can be turned on or off by location using a simple interface, and dynamic lighting is provided by a grandMA system. As a result, the lighting sequences are exactly synchronised with the music.

“The play-out of videos in the stadium is also linked to our control system. In this way, synchronisation is always assured. This results in surprising light shows during various events.” adds a PWL representative.

Painting with Light has also recently been involved in a major European project to design an acoustic cloud with efficient lighting for the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in Brussels.
