Disney and the city of Anaheim reveal a new development agreement

Disneyland in California has committed to spend at least $1.9 billion over the next 10 years under a proposed DisneylandForward development agreement.

Disney’s new development agreement with the city of Anaheim was revealed on 23 January during an Anaheim City Council workshop, the Orange County Register reports.

The $1.9bn investment over the next decade would go towards new theme park lands, attractions, hotels, retail and dining. The plans also include potential experiences based on Frozen, Tangled, Peter Pan, ZootopiaToy Story and Tron.

If the development agreement is approved, Disney would also need to spend another $90 million on parking structures, pedestrian bridges and road improvements in the resort area, and on the acquisition of parts of Magic Way, Clementine Street, Gene Autry Way and Hotel Way.

Additionally, in exchange for flexibility to choose where it builds its new offerings, Disneyland would invest $30m in affordable housing and $8m in parks in Anaheim.

“We listened to Anaheim’s leaders and worked hard to address what is important for the city,” Ken Potrock, president of Disneyland Resort, said in a statement.

“We are proud that DisneylandForward will provide many important benefits directly to the residents of Anaheim.”

Disney and Anaheim officials have confirmed that a planning commission hearing on the resort’s proposal is scheduled for March, followed by a vote by the Anaheim City Council in May.

Disney spending $60bn on parks

In November, Disney parks chairman Josh D’Amaro said the company has “enough room to build another Disneyland” in Anaheim.

D’Amaro’s comments came after Disney revealed plans to invest $60 billion in its parks, experiences and products division over the next 10 years to turbocharge growth.

As above, Anaheim residents and business leaders have already provided early feedback on Disneyland’s proposed expansion.

Disney’s global development vice president Rachel Alde said the company will work with residents and is “simply asking to utilize the entitlements that we already have for the theme park and hotel and spread it across the lands that we already own and control.”
