China's first Hello Kitty indoor theme park to open 2018 in Shanghai

China’s State Council is supporting a RMB 11 billion ($1.6 billion) project by Hainan Province to build a Hello Kitty theme park.

Hainan Hello Kitty Paradise  is one of 12 key pilot projects being built on Hainan Island.

It is not the first Hello Kitty theme park in China. Hello Kitty was announced as the star of a new indoor theme park in Shanghai last year.

The Shimao Group licensed the popular children’s character from Japanese company, Sanrio.

Hainan province, China, is set to build a number of of brand-name theme parks and other resorts. It is part of the area’s goal to become an international tourism destination.

Earlier this year, Hainan province signed agreements with 26 global companies. Several of these were Hong Kong-based groups.

The province also signed a deal with the UK-based firm Merlin Entertainments Group to co-build a Legoland Theme Park in Sanya.

Hainan has been a special economic zone for 30 years.
