The first Legoland site opened in Billund, Denmark. Lego is a portmanteau of two Danish words Leg and Godt, denoting āPlay Wellā. Each park is based on the popular Lego brick product and is operated by leisure company Merlin Entertainments.
Each on has a Miniland section, with model village-style representations of famous cities and landmarks made from Lego bricks.
The next park opened outside of the brand’s home country near London, UK. In terms of area, Legoland Windsor remains the largest Legoland park in the world. Its themed areas include The Beginning, Heartlake City, and Knights’ Kingdom. The concept has adapted to different global environments, such as Dubai, by introducing predominantly undercover sections while remaining true to the brand’s feel.
Accompanying the main parks, many sites have expanded to become resorts with additional attractions such as adventure golf and on-site accommodation and hotels.
The Legoland brand has since expanded with Legoland Discovery Centres, smaller, indoor versions of the attraction often found in shopping malls and city centres. These venues generally focus less on rides, with a larger proportion of interactive experiences.
It was announced in early 2022 that these sites would be rebranded into Lego Discovery Centres. There are approximately thirty Lego Discovery Centres, which can currently be found in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.
