Event Network transforms Explorer Store at Zoo Atlanta

Firm has brought in the latest innovations in sustainable store design

Event Network, a leading operator of retail stores for experiential attractions in the US, has unveiled its latest store remodel in partnership with Zoo Atlanta. Known for optimising revenue for its partners through a singular focus on best-in-class retail, Event Network has been operating the retail business for the AZA-accredited Zoo since June 2021.

After a successful remodel of the Zoo’s popular Panda Pagoda, which was completed in Spring 2022, Event Network collaborated with Zoo Atlanta to redesign the main retail space known as the Explorer Store. The goal was to reimagine the space by updating the building structure itself as well as to incorporate the latest innovations in sustainable store design in support of Zoo Atlanta’s mission.

Bringing the outdoors in

Guests will now be able to enter the new Zoo Atlanta Explorer Store through two sets of double doors. These doors allow for increased traffic flow and provide improved accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs. Plus, a new corner entry point was installed inviting guests into an immersive shopping experience and blurring the lines between the inside and outside spaces. The original building insulation was replaced entirely, and new windows were installed which exceed current efficacy guidelines making the structure more energy efficient.

The intention of the remodel was to bring elements of the outdoors into the store environment while incorporating the highest sustainable design and fabrication practices throughout the project. From the 100% recyclable vinyl wood grain flooring to the new high-efficiency LED track lighting system, the importance of communicating a message of energy conservation and eco-efficiency was carried throughout the entire remodel and construction process.

The FSC-certified wood used in the new slat-wall system was inspired by the loblolly pine tree which is native to the Southern US. Other wall areas are made of textured concrete which gives the store a modern feel.

Telling a compelling story

“When store design incorporates a variety of textures, whether it’s the variation of material used on the walls or the floors, it’s a helpful tool,” says Corey Folster, VP of visual merchandising for Event Network. “It makes it easier to delineate shopping areas and to tell a compelling story with the merchandise. We want to ensure that we are extending the message of Zoo Atlanta into the entire space.”

“The team at Zoo Atlanta has been so supportive throughout this whole process,” adds Adam Nelson, VP of experiential retail design for Event Network. “Even as unforeseen challenges came up in the process that required changes to the initial design, we’ve all come together in order to make this a highly collaborative experience.”

The centrepiece of this new store is Big Tim, a nearly 6-foot-tall sculpture of an African elephant commissioned by Event Network from Ocean Sole, a company that recycles flop-flops for use in their art pieces and products. Big Tim is based on a real African Elephant that passed away in 2020, part of the rare “tusker” group of elephants in Kenya known for having tusks so large that they can touch the ground.

Big Tim’s sculpture is a reminder of the shared mission of both Zoo Atlanta and Event Network to protect wildlife and their habitats through conservation, education, and engaging experiences.

“When Zoo Atlanta selected a third-party retail partner, it was very important that we partnered with a business that held the same values that fuel our mission of conservation and inclusion,” says Raymond King, president, and CEO of Zoo Atlanta. “Event Network is that partner and now they have beautifully reimagined both of our stores. Enjoy our newest retail experience (remodelled store) – it is much more than just a gift shop!”

Earlier this year, Event Network announced a new partnership with Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) in Clearwater, Florida. The firm will showcase an expanded assortment of merchandise that highlights the work of the Aquarium and the amazing animals who live at CMA.
