Elmwood Projects, a fit-out specialist within the museum and commercial sectors, has completed a new gallery experience at a top visitor attraction in Scotland.
With oceans covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface and most of this being unexplored, Elmwood helped Dynamic Earth to examine this natural wonder in more detail. The Discovering the Deep project recognises the appetite for better public engagement with marine science, resulting in the creation of a new permanent Oceans Exhibition at the museum in Edinburgh.
“We were delighted to be awarded the contract of main contractor (CDM) on this project that plunges visitors of all ages into the deep alongside all species of marine life,” says the firm.
Safety matters
The redevelopment of two permanent exhibition spaces (formerly Oceans 1 and Oceans 2 galleries) over an 11-week programme formed the basis of the revitalised Dynamic Earth visitor experience.
Elmwood Projects collaborated with its specialist supply chain and Studio MB to deliver the fit-out works which included alterations to existing museum spaces and new interactive displays. The £526,800 project included AV specialist work, new finishes throughout, bespoke joinery, graphic design and signwriting, electrical works, decoration, ceilings and panels.
“As we were working within a busy live museum environment, every precaution was taken to ensure there was no damage to the existing structure of the museum.
“Ensuring the visitors enjoyed their experiences on the day they were at Dynamic Earth was of paramount importance to us, therefore, we put strict safety measures in place to make sure there was no risk of injury to the visitors, and of course the museum staff and site operatives.”
Discovering the Deep fits seamlessly into Dynamic Earth’s repertoire, which includes a Planetarium, Food Chain Cafe and Natural Selection Gift Shop. Elmwood Projects reports that, since the new gallery opened in April 2022, it has been a key attraction for regular and new visitors.
As the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is a thriving destination for new experiences and destinations. The city recently became home to the Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor experience, as the centrepiece of a £185m investment by multinational alcoholic beverage company Diageo.
