MCN call for proposals

Proposals which showcase innovation, emerging work, and key themes in museum technology can be submitted until 21 June

The Museum Computer Network (MCN), a non-profit organisation supporting museums to achieve their digital goals, has extended its call for proposals for MCN 2024 until Friday 21 June.

MCN 2024, an annual conference which brings together cultural heritage professionals to develop their digital capacity, is taking place from 22 to 24 October in Kansas, US.

For over 50 years, MCN has brought together museum technology professionals from all career levels and disciplines. This year, the organisation will continue this tradition by encouraging proposals from both young and experienced professionals, to showcase innovation, emerging work, and key themes in museum technology.

5, 15, & 45 minute presentations

MCN is calling for proposals for 45-minute long sessions, 15-minute case studies, and five-minute fast-paced Ignite talks.

Proposals for 45- and 15-minute presentations should include an abstract, target audience, learning objectives, approach to promoting equity and inclusion, and details of all co-presenters.

For the Ignite talks, applicants need to provide a title and 500-word description.

MCN recommends that applicants consider the following points:

  • How have you used technology to create a more engaging, accessible, or impactful experience?
  • What key takeaways can you share from collaborative projects that leveraged the expertise of both new and experienced professionals?
  • How have you adapted, iterated, or advanced an idea gained from a previous exchange?
  • What can you share with the next generation of museum professionals?
  • What experiences can help inform seasoned professionals?

All proposals will be evaluated by the programme co-chairs and a committee of volunteer proposal reviewers with diverse skills. The evaluation criteria includes: session purpose; relevancy; diversity, inclusion and access; potential impact; facilitation; and format.

MCN has been hosting its annual conference since 1968. The event attracts over 600 professionals working in cultural heritage from museums, historic sites, and tourist attractions across North America and beyond.

Participants hail from a wide range of professional backgrounds, including information technology, digital outreach, visitor engagement, collections, conservation, archives, libraries, curatorial, education, and marketing.

The 2024 conference will be hosted in partnership with the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, and will gather cultural heritage professionals from museums and historic sites from North America and worldwide.
