IAAPA, the global association for the attractions industry, has revealed that its 2022-2026 Global Theme and Amusement Park Outlook Report forecasts a seven percent boost in attendance for North American theme parks, with an estimated attendance of 308.5 million in 2023.
Additionally, it is predicted that consumer spending will rise this year, with an estimated increase of 15% in North America and reaching close to $32 billion by 2023. If achieved, this means that the domestic attractions sector will have recovered pandemic-related losses.
“To say the domestic attractions industry is looking at a good 2023 is an understatement,” says Jakob Wahl, president and chief executive officer for IAAPA. “We expect the market in 2023 to fully recapture the lost spending in 2020, and the amount of investment planned for our region supports the demand we’re seeing.”
IAAPA identifies key trends
Memorial Day Weekend, which is coming up at the end of the month, traditionally ushers in the summer travel season, and IAAPA members with seasonal operations around the nation are prepared to welcome guests for 2023. The projected increase in visitors this summer is something that year-round attractions are likewise ready for and eager to welcome.
The report also identifies some key attractions trends, including:
Competitive socialising
The goal of getting together with friends at locations like Drive Shack or TopGolf is to have fun, but there is also a layer of competitiveness. Because the attraction provides a balance of action and relaxation to allow for conversation and quality time together, these activities lead to deeper connections with visitors.
Technological advancements
Worldwide technology gains were driven by the pandemic, and the same may be said for improvements in the worldwide attractions sector. IAAPA member parks and attractions have worked hard to improve mobile apps and simplify visitor experiences by using more technology. With the touch of a button, guests can now place a drink or food order, or book their next ride direct from their phone.
New hotels and resorts
Many parks and attractions have also made changes in order to become multi-day destinations. In order to increase the value of visitor trips, several operators have opened new resorts and hotels, or plan to do so shortly.
A focus on sustainability
Visitors can have confidence in the fact that many attractions are increasing their sustainability efforts. This includes making better use of recycled goods, efforts to reduce food waste, and placing more emphasis on clean, green energy.
Inclusivity
IAAPA has noted a rise in efforts within the sector to create settings that are more inclusive of all visitors. The new Peppa Pig Theme Park in Florida, an accredited autism centre, is a key example of this. The Dallas-Fort Worth region will see a second Peppa Pig Theme Park opening next year.
Last week, the speakers for IAAPA Expo Asia 2023 were announced. The trade show at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore will include talks from key figures in the attractions industry. The agenda will feature speakers from Shanghai Disney Resort, Water World Ocean Park Hong Kong, Legoland Shanghai Resort, Universal Beijing Resort, Puy de Fou Asia, and Six Flags Qiddiya.
