Liseberg has initiated legal proceedings against the insurance provider Trygg-Hansa, which refused to pay insurance compensation following the fire at Oceana water park on 12 February 2024. Trygg-Hansa claims that the Swedish amusement park does not have an insurable interest in Oceana. Liseberg’s claim amounts to just over 1 billion Swedish kronor (approximately €92 million).

The fire at the Oceana site caused significant property damage just before the water park’s opening. Liseberg’s estimated costs for demolition, decontamination, and restoration exceed a billion Swedish kronor. The construction was insured with Trygg-Hansa, including all-risk coverage. After the fire, Liseberg sought compensation for rebuilding costs, but on June 30 2025, Trygg-Hansa announced that the claim had been denied.

Trygg-Hansa justified its decision by saying that Liseberg did not sustain any compensable damage and does not have an insurable interest in the damaged property.

“We see no other way forward than to file a lawsuit”

“Liseberg took out the project insurance with Trygg-Hansa to get financial protection against this type of risk to the construction project,” says Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.

“The insurance was supposed to account for the fact that it is a large and very costly construction with several contractors performing work for Liseberg. That Trygg-Hansa is now trying to avoid responsibility by claiming that Liseberg has not suffered any damage is hard to understand.”

Trygg-Hansa states Liseberg did not act negligently in relation to the fire in a way that excludes insurance coverage. Instead, it claims Liseberg cannot get compensation because two of its contractors caused the fire through gross negligence.

“It is not reasonable that Liseberg should be denied insurance compensation because the insurance company considers that parties other than Liseberg have been negligent. We therefore see no other way forward than to file a lawsuit and have Liseberg’s right to insurance compensation tried by the court,” adds Andersen.

Liseberg has sued Trygg-Hansa in Stockholm District Court, demanding 1.02 billion SEK for fire damage, plus interest and legal costs.

The fire engulfed the new water park’s outdoor slides and other facilities under construction. One person died and 16 others were injured. In December 2024, Liseberg unveiled a new design for the water park (pictured, top). The decision to rebuild it was made after Liseberg cleared the site and carried out extensive investigations.
