New flagship store is inspired by the Forbidden Forest

Japan’s Harry Potter experiences are being expanded with the upcoming opening of two new retail outlets in Tokyo this summer.

The first store, Harry Potter Shop Harajuku, launches in Tokyo in August. Located in the Harajuku shopping district, this flagship store will sell collections of Wizarding World merchandise for fans of the brand.

Details are currently limited, but the shop features an interior inspired by the Forbidden Forest on the outskirts of Hogwarts.

The world’s first flagship Harry Potter store opened in New York in 2021. This features interactive elements, themed areas and handmade props.

Technology is also utilised across the shop, with highlights including an interactive wand table and enchanted keys that unlock exclusive facts, stats and videos.

In addition to Tokyo’s flagship store, an existing retail outlet called Mahou-Dokoro Akasaka Wizarding World Street is closing on 29 June and will reopen as Harry Potter Shop Akasaka on 17 July.

Harry Potter expansion in Japan

These new shops follow the 2023 opening of Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter, and the launch of an official Harry Potter online shop in Japan in 2024.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo is located on the former site of the Toshimaen amusement park in Nerima, Tokyo.

Visitors can explore new exhibits and interactive experiences, and view props, costumes, and famous sets like Diagon Alley and the Great Hall at Hogwarts.

Geoff Spooner, senior vice president of worldwide studio tours at Warner Bros. Discovery, told blooloop: “You can visit the Ministry of Magic and Diagon Alley and you can explore your favourite parts of Hogwarts Castle.

“You can venture into the Forbidden Forest, you can step onto the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9¾.”

He added, “And, of course, everyone should be reassured that you do get to ride a broomstick.”
