Barco, the technology company focusing on innovative visualization solutions for different applications, has renewed and expanded its existing partnership with French artainment venture Culturespaces.
Barco is pleased to announce that for the next three years, it will remain the exclusive provider of projectors for Culturespaces’ digital art exhibitions across the globe, including Atelier des Lumières in Paris and the soon to open Bassins de Lumières in Bordeaux.
Both companies are leaders in their own sectors, and together they are working together to change the face of immersive multi-media museum experiences.
Making art accessible
Culturespaces was founded in Paris in 1990 and is the largest private organisation managing public museums on France, as well as being an instrumental player in the rest of Europe. The art experiences created by Culturespaces make use of unique spaces, for example, a disused quarry and a World War II-era submarine base. Through digital projection and music, these are transformed into huge video canvasses.

“The art world is still very confined and only a small part of the world population is interested in visiting museums,” says Bruno Monnier, CEO at Culturespaces.
“Our mission is to make art more accessible to a wider and younger public. With the creation of our unique inclusive digital experiences, based on video, music and interactivity, we want to invite visitors of all backgrounds for a fascinating immersive journey into the artistic universe.”
Partnering with international projection experts Barco enables Culturespaces to bring its unique artainment concepts to venues around the world.
A successful partnership
Culturespaces first began working with Barco in 2016, when it signed an agreement to provide 170 video projectors to the Carrières des Lumières museum in Les Baux-de-Provence, as well as Atelier des Lumières in Paris.
Thanks to this new agreement, Barco will be the sole projection technology partner for existing and future Culturespaces projects over the next three years. This will include the new venture in Bordeaux, Bassins de Lumières. As well as delivering 168 new laser projectors in the short term, the agreement also includes a service contract meaning Barco will maintain all of the equipment.
“Our goal is immersing visitors, not impressing them with the amount of technology in the set-up. Technology is actually just the tool,” says Augustin de Cointet de Fillain, Director of Culturespaces Digital. “But at the same time, the quality of the exhibition depends on the quality of the projection. In addition, our installations are often in particularly demanding spaces imposing a certain complexity.
“So we need the best of the best, and Barco really stands out for us as they offer the full package. We engage and co-create with each other and look together for the best solution that reinforces the content and expresses the art the way we intended to.”
Immersive visitor experiences
Together, the two companies will use their expertise to provide memorable and immersive visitor experiences around the globe.
“This is a quintessential example of how Barco wants to position itself in the themed entertainment market,” says Jan de Witte, Barco CEO. “Having such a close relationship with a partner who is a thought leader in this field is absolutely a beneficiary for us as a technology company.
“Through the exchange of innovative ideas, we can focus on creating value-add visualization solutions enabling immersive digital story-telling and dynamic exhibitions. Together we can have an impact on the world of arts and change the museum experience forever, with a proposition that is scalable across the globe.”
Earlier this year, Barco also announced the launch of a new e-book for the museum sector, called How to future-proof your museum.
