Successful applicants will help shape the organisation’s direction and activity

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced that the ICOM UK is looking for four trustees to support the delivery of its new strategy, which aims to assist UK museums working internationally and to connect its members to the worldwide museum community.

Applications are invited for the roles of finance lead, environmental sustainability lead, heritage protection lead, and member for Wales.

Trustees will have the opportunity help shape the future for ICOM UK’s direction and activity in both the UK and worldwide, while contributing their experience to the membership and the sector. The new trustees will be appointed at ICOM UK’s online AGM on Friday, 11 July 2025.

Connecting the international museum community

ICOM was founded in 1946 and works towards five key objectives: establishing standards of excellence, leading a diplomatic forum, developing a professional network, spearheading a global think tank, and carrying out international missions. It now has some 138 national committees, with more than 50,000 members.

This community benefits from conferences, training opportunities and exchange programmes, as well as involvement with subject specialist groups and international committees, an online library, practical tools and professional standards, and free or discounted entry to thousands of museums across the world.

ICOM UK is the only museum alliance in the UK with a dedicated global focus. The organisation seeks to connect its members in the UK and the UK’s overseas territories to the international museum community, contributing to the global heritage agenda through partnership working and a dynamic events programme.

The 2025 ICOM UK conference is taking place in Liverpool from 1 to 2 May, and will focus on the theme Regenerative Museums for Sustainable Futures.

Lectures, panel discussions, and an evening reception will be held on the first day, with workshops and guided tours of the city and museums on day two. With more international speakers than ever before, attendees can expect practical examples, case studies, and engaging conversations.

Earlier this month, ICOM UK hosted an online event for students and emerging professionals in the museum and cultural sector. This one-day conference, titled Embracing Transformation – Healing With Museums, explored the healing potential of museums.
