The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles is improving the visitor experience with interactive wayfinding maps and high-speed guest Wi-Fi.

For the project, the museum has partnered with Purple, an intelligent spaces and digital engagement company.

The collaboration will use Purple's platform to provide high-speed Wi-Fi access across the Natural History Museum's 11-acre campus.

This includes popular exhibits like the Dinosaur Hall, the Gem and Mineral Hall and the new wing, NHM Commons.

Visitors can use new wayfinding maps to access additional information about each exhibit.

The maps will also allow guests to easily navigate the museum, discover new areas of interest, and plan a more personalised experience.

“Creating a truly immersive and engaging museum experience for our visitors is a top priority,” said Danny Inukai, chief information officer at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC).

Personalised museum visits

“This partnership allows us to not only offer the seamless connectivity today’s visitor expects, but also to drive a new form of discovery and gain invaluable data-driven insights that will allow us to further personalize and enrich every aspect of the museum experience.”

As above, by using the Purple platform, the museum will gain data insights on dwell times and can therefore identify high-interest exhibits and allocate resources to them.

The institution can also use the Purple analytics dashboard to understand visitor behaviour and preferences.

“Cultural institutions like NHMLAC are reimagining how they connect with visitors, moving beyond static exhibits to create more personalized, interactive journeys,” said Gavin Wheeldon, CEO of Purple.

“This partnership reflects that shift, using technology not just to modernize operations, but to strengthen the relationships between the museum and its guests.”

The Natural History Museum is part of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC), which also includes the La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park.
