Company shares details of standout projects in Belgium and Germany

Painting with Light (PWL), a lighting and multimedia expert, is celebrating a trio of projects that have opened this year in Germany and Belgium.

The company has contributed to the Smurf dark ride at Plopsaland Germany, the Thor Experience in Genk, Belgium, and the Plopsa Theater at Plopsaland Belgium.

These projects embody PWL’s motto, ‘Engineering Emotion Through Light’.

“We specialize in lighting design, show control systems, programming, and project management for world-class attractions,” says a spokesperson from the company. “From concept to commissioning, PWL transforms spaces into unforgettable experiences using cutting-edge technologies.”

Complex integration

PWL provided project management, lighting design, and show programming, and oversaw testing and commissioning for the brand-new dark ride, The Smurfs’ Adventure, which opened earlier this year at Plopsaland Germany (previously known as Holiday Park).

Located in the park’s former castle, which has been refurbished as part of a major investment plan, the experience takes visitors on a journey through the Smurf’s Village with Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy Smurf, and many more characters. Animatronics, scents, a specially composed soundtrack, and video projections bring the village to life.

This complex project required PWL to integrate its control systems, bespoke lighting networks, and precise timecode programming. The team used interactive technologies and real-time monitoring tools to guarantee seamless synchronisation and visitor immersion.

Transforming stagecraft

At Plopsaland Belgium (formerly Plopsa de Panne), PWL has designed and built a cutting-edge, 240 square metre LED screen setup in the Plopsa Theater. This dynamic visual canvas reimagines stagecraft and marks a new era in immersive entertainment.

The screens are arranged across four depth levels on automated rails to create layered visual effects that immerse audiences in a world of movement and light.

“This project exemplifies PWL’s core philosophy: using technology to serve storytelling,” says the company.

“The LED screens don’t just display visuals — they become part of the narrative, shifting perspectives, enhancing emotion, and creating depth. The automated rail system allows for real-time scene changes, while the video programming ensures every pixel is perfectly timed to the performance.”

PWL managed every stage of the project, from the initial concept to the final cue. Its remit included technical design, engineering of the structural and control systems to support multi-level screen movement and high-resolution video playback, and project management across vendors, timelines, and technical teams to guarantee seamless delivery.

The team also led on build and system integration, the installation and integration of the LED panels, automation systems, and the overall control infrastructure. They handled video programming, creating dynamic content sequences and synchronising them with the production’s storyline and stage movement.

Light, sound & emotion

In Genk, Belgium, PWL created a unique immersive experience that brings the past, present, and future of Thor Park to life.

The Thor Experience intertwines tradition and technology, telling stories of the region’s mining history while also exploring Thor Park’s future. The PWL team handled technical design, project management, and light/video programming for the experience, which includes four projectors for 360 degree projection mapping, 3D audio, and a vibrating floor.

“The integrated vibrating floor makes this immersive film experience truly unique,” says PWL. “Through a powerful vibration plate, visitors can physically feel the impact of the mining past beneath their feet. That physical element elevates the experience to an entirely new level.”

Aside from the advanced technologies, the setting itself required a creative solution. PWL developed a unique box-in-box installation measuring 6 x 6 x 3 meters in a former mining building. This produced a tight, technically ideal environment that perfectly realised the experience while maintaining the building’s historical character.

Additionally, PWL designed the complete setup to make it easy for Thor Park staff to operate the experience, from projection to door control.

“For our team in Genk, Belgium, this project reinforces our position as a leader in sensory design and immersive media. It’s a testament to our commitment to pushing boundaries, crafting unforgettable experiences, and delivering customized solutions that resonate deeply with audiences,” says PWL.

Recently, PWL shared details of its work on Tutankhamun: The Immersive Exhibition, which opened in London this spring.
