New attraction is a nod to the original Phantom Theater dark ride

Kings Island in Ohio is launching a new family ride called Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare in spring 2026.

Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare will be located at the site of the park’s original Phantom Theater dark ride, in the structure currently occupied by Boo Blasters on Boo Hill.

Per a press release, the quirky characters and chaos from the original ride will return for the new version, enhanced with modern technology, updated scenic elements and expanded storytelling.

Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare

Described as a comedic and fast-paced family adventure, the ride experience begins on a dark and stormy night for the grand reopening of the haunted Phantom Theater.

During a performance by the theatre’s resident organist, Maestro, a lightning strike unleashes mischievous musical spirits.

These must be returned to the organ by guests riding in “enchanted opera boxes” and equipped with “special spellbound flashlights”, Kings Island said.

Along the way, the bewitched ride vehicles travel through immersive scenes, including haunted hallways, dressing rooms and a fiery boiler room.

In total, 26 interactive scenes feature multi-sensory effects like wind and sound, as well as hidden Easter eggs.

“Families who have visited Kings Island will remember how special the original Phantom Theater was, and they’ve always wanted it to return,” said Tony Carovillano, park manager of Kings Island.

He said, “While paying homage to the original ride, Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare’s modern and advanced features will help create new memories and stories for all who take their seat inside this amazing experience.”

Boo Blasters ride replaced at Kings Island

Guests have until 1 September to ride Boo Blasters, when preparations for the new ride will begin.

Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare is manufactured by Sally Dark Rides.

Kings Island is one of the top 20 theme parks in North America, attracting nearly 3.5 million visitors in 2023.

The park offers more than 100 rides, shows and attractions, including 15 coasters.
