PortAventura World is opening its first carbon-neutral hotel, Colorado Creek, in June.

Colorado Creek will be the first zero-emission hotel at PortAventura World, amid the company’s attempt to minimise its environmental footprint.

PortAventura World’s sixth hotel is inspired by the Gold Rush in California, and offers 4-star accommodation with direct access to PortAventura Park.

With 150 rooms, Colorado Creek brings the resort total to more than 2,200 rooms. It will open on June 1, 2019.

The initiative in the attraction’s sustainability plan started with a calculation of the project’s carbon footprint to allow associated greenhouse gas emissions to be offset.

“This initiative will make Colorado Creek a carbon-neutral hotel,” said Fernando Aldecoa, General Director of PortAventura World.

“It is the first in a project that has the aim of being extended to other areas of the Resort. Through this initiative, PortAventura World consolidates its commitment with a responsible and sustainable management model, which is a cornerstone of the company’s ESG policy.”

Elsewhere, 100% of electricity at PortAventura comes from renewable energy sources that produce no CO2 emissions, certified by a Guarantee of Origin (GO).

In October, PortAventura World announced that it plans to eliminate plastics in the resort by 2020.

PortAventura continues to grow, with this year’s expansion of the Convention Centre and the opening of its new Sesame Street ride.

Developed together with the Sesame Workshop, the new interactive attraction will be the first Sesame Street dark ride in Europe. The family-friendly experience will be located in the SesamoAventura area of the main PortAventura park.

The mixed media attraction, opening on April 6, will be housed inside a newly constructed 1,300 square metre (14,000 sq ft) building. The near six-minute long ride will be preceded by a 10 minute pre-show.
