PortAventura is now home to the world’s only coaster inspired by Uncharted

PortAventura World has opened its new Uncharted-themed dark ride coaster, created in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

‘Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence’ was also developed with Sally Dark Rides, a leading creator of immersive attractions, 1050 studio, a leading interactive media studio, and Intamin, a creator of record-breaking amusement rides.

Inspired by the 2022 film Uncharted, the multi-dimensional indoor roller coaster features 700 metres of track, five launches, audiovisual effects and immersive elements.

The world’s only coaster to be based on Uncharted is also the first in Europe to offer a lateral drop. Highlights include a 15-metre-high inverted free fall with a 70-degree incline, an inverted launch and a sideways drop.

David García, managing director of PortAventura World, said the collaboration with Sony Pictures “permits us to extend our global footprint, by means of a product that is truly state-of-the-art on an international scale and stands equal to the finest attractions globally“.

He added, “With this ride, our guests can anticipate an unmatched, innovative experience that enhances the diversity and quality of attractions offered. All of this reinforces our position as one of the premier tourist destinations in both Europe and the world.”

VR experience for guests who are unable to ride

As well as a themed retail area, the new attraction includes a unique virtual reality (VR) experience that recreates it for visitors with disabilities who are unable to ride.

Sony Pictures’ partnerships EVP and head of location-based entertainment (LBE) Jeffrey Godsick said the ride “is a testament to PortAventura‘s expertise in attraction development”. “A display of safety and care with the IP was evident from fabrication through completion,” he added.

“PortAventura World is known for adventure and our global teams, including PlayStation, have worked collectively to ensure all guests can look forward to becoming Uncharted explorers.”

Uncharted is inspired by the PlayStation video game by Naughty Dog. “The Uncharted film takes viewers on a grand adventure in search of treasure, making it perfectly suited for a thrilling roller coaster ride,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions.

Luis Valencia, development director for PortAventura World, said the new dark ride “reinforces our role as a disruptor in the entertainment industry through the implementation of cutting-edge technology”.
