Event, the experience design agency, has revealed details of a 360-degree exhibition which it has created for The Book of Kells Experience at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. The exhibition offers visitors an unprecedented opportunity to discover Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure.
The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript which dates from the ninth century. This extraordinary artefact is the focal point for the new experience, which uses light and audio to explore the story of the historical masterpiece, and also the internationally significant collections in Trinity College Dublin’s Old Library.
1,200 years of history
The experience presents the Book of Kells in the Old Library’s Long Room, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Visitors then explore the new 360-degree exhibition. This is the first exhibition of its kind to be shown in Dublin, and was created by Event in partnership with multiple university departments.
Three themed chapters invite visitors to follow the Book on its incredible journey through time. The exhibition reveals 1,200 years of history, transporting visitors from 800 AD on the Scottish island of Iona, across the Irish Sea to Kells, and finally to modern-day Dublin.
Visitors can also see a selection of books and manuscripts from the Old Library’s renowned collections. They will go back in time to 1916 to hear the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, engage with dynamic statues of Ada Lovelace, Jonathan Swift, Rosalind Franklin, and William Shakespeare, and discover the Long Room’s architectural development from 1732 to the present day.
The grand finale of the experience is a reimagined Long Room where visitors see an extraordinarily innovative digital reconstruction in projections of this spectacular space.
Jack Smurthwaite, senior content designer at Event, comments: “It has been a privilege working with the team at Trinity College Dublin to bring this exhibition to life, allowing visitors to experience the Book of Kells and the Library’s precious collections in new and exciting ways. We hope that everybody who visits will leave with a fuller understanding of the stories within the collections and a deeper appreciation of these rare literary treasures.”
Last month, Event celebrated the launch of Home of Carlsberg in Copenhagen. This attraction explores 200 years of the brand’s legacy and impact and opened after a five-year redesign led by the firm.
