LACMA’s new building is now more than 65 percent complete

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has exceeded its $750 million fundraising goal for a new building called the David Geffen Galleries.

The campaign, dubbed Building LACMA, is funding the construction of the museum’s new home for its collections, which is now more than 65 percent complete.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor, the David Geffen Galleries is due to be completed late next year.

The new space, owned by the County of Los Angeles, is funded 80 percent by private donations and 20 percent by the county.

“We have reached this milestone thanks to the generosity and hard work of so many people,” said Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO.

“We offer heartfelt thanks to all those who propelled us to this achievement – from our trustees to first-time donors – and to LACMA’s countless supporters from every part of Los Angeles.

“The David Geffen Galleries will not only be a sublime new home for LACMA’s collections, but a testament to a remarkable wellspring of civic pride and an incredible gift to Los Angeles.”

The new building, which was approved in 2019, will also create 3.5 acres of new outdoor space for sculptures, programming, events and education activities.

New building set to complete in 2024

LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of nearly 152,000 objects.

Elsewhere, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County‘s $75m renovation and expansion project, dubbed NHM Commons, is set to open next year.

The expansion, designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners with landscape design by Studio-MLA, will add 60,000 square feet of space to the museum in LA’s Exposition Park.
