Super Nintendo World is a series of theme park lands found at Universal Studios theme parks around the world. The first opened at Universal Studios Japan, opening in March 2021. The immersive environment has been crafted to replicate the style found in Mario IP games, with green hills and textures replicated from various titles.
The anchor ride, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, uses augmented reality (AR), projection mapping, and screen projection alongside a physical set. Yoshi’s Adventure offers a slower-paced journey past scenic sets. There is also a ‘hidden’ attraction, Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. This simulates the boss-level element often found in Mario games.
A selection of themed retail and F&B outlets offering Mario-themed merchandise can also be found in the area. “Power Up” Bands can be purchased and linked to smartphones, allowing guests to collect digital coins and compete with other visitors.
Following the success and popularity of Super Nintendo World, Universal has announced an expansion at Universal Studios Japan. This also features another popular Nintendo character, Donkey Kong. The new area is based on the jungle-themed Donkey Kong Country franchise. It will feature a headline family rollercoaster with a patented track system.
The second Super Nintendo World, at Universal Studios Hollywood, opened in 2023. Concept art for Florida’s newest Universal park, Epic Universe, appears to show that a further Super Nintendo World area will also be coming to Orlando.
