OpenAire, a global leader in designing and constructing custom-engineered, all-weather retractable roof enclosures for aquatic venues, has announced a partnership with American Resort Management, working on the Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterparks project.

As previously announced, these water parks will serve as a series of aquatic destinations designed to introduce a new entertainment experience featuring Mattel’s popular brands. Each park will showcase many of Mattel’s iconic names, such as Barbie and Hot Wheels, with attractions including lazy rivers, wave pools, and waterslides.

The Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterparks will be housed in OpenAire’s state-of-the-art retractable-roof enclosures and developed in partnership with American Resort Management and Martin Aquatic under the Mattel brand.

Enhancing both atmosphere and sustainability

Each destination park will feature an all-aluminium retractable roof structure designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed by OpenAire.

Each curved roof spans 185 feet wide and extends about 375 to 400 feet long, with 35-foot-high glass sidewalls and vertical glass ends. The roof includes motorised retractable panels that open to the sky, enabling fresh air and natural sunlight to enhance the indoor space.

Constructed from painted, corrosion-resistant aluminium, each structure will be tailored to the specific climate conditions at the Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark locations, whether facing snow, rain, or hurricanes. OpenAire’s motorised roof and operable windows are designed to deliver approximately 15% in annual energy savings, enhancing the waterpark's sustainability.

The companies participating in this project leverage design sophistication, operational discipline, and brand-experience excellence to transform the attractions from water parks into prominent marquee destinations.

Richard Coleman, CEO at American Resort Management, says: "OpenAire will bring a competitive innovation advantage to the new Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterparks.

"By putting these new indoor waterparks in energy efficient, retractable roof, corrosion free aluminum buildings, these parks operate more cost effectively than traditional indoor waterparks. These waterparks will establish the new standard for which global brands will need to exceed.

"It is critical that owners of waterparks plan for the future in terms of partner reliability, building performance and operational excellence. As the operator of other parks in OpenAire retractable roof buildings, our team know that these structures both meet and exceed all expectations.”

Mark Albertine, CEO of OpenAire, adds: “Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark represents the future of the indoor waterpark industry.

"By engineering and building structures that can withstand the harsh chemical realities of indoor waterparks, while at the same time saving both money and reducing energy use, means we are turning indoor waterparks into viable economic solutions for municipalities around the nation.”

Mattel initially revealed plans to develop the first Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark in Orlando, Florida, and has since confirmed that the next destinations will be constructed in Bellevue, Nebraska and Bradley, Illinois.
