The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) has released new renderings showing how the institution will look after the largest expansion and renovation project in its history.

The project involves adding the new 173,000-square-foot McGlothlin Wing II to the south and west sides of the current museum, as well as renovating gallery spaces in the existing building.

Approximately 45,000 square feet of existing gallery space will be renovated, allowing the museum to showcase more European art and photography in its permanent collection.

The newly planned McGlothlin Wing II will offer around 30,000 square feet for American art, 8,600 square feet for African art, and 12,400 square feet for contemporary art.

The existing building is also being expanded upwards with a fifth floor, and more additions in the new wing include spaces for special exhibitions and events, meeting rooms, and a cafe and bar.

Project groundbreaking set for summer

"The new look of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will reflect our commitment to openness and community engagement," said director and CEO Alex Nyerges.

"The expansion’s architecture and design are expressions of our ongoing intention to be a welcoming space for all. We want all visitors to see themselves here."

The design, developed by SmithGroup, blurs the boundary between the museum's interior and exterior, with features including suspended staircases and expansive windows.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' campus is being prepared for construction, with a groundbreaking for the expansion expected in summer 2026.

The museum will remain open to visitors throughout construction, and the McGlothlin Wing II is scheduled to open to the public in 2029.

The total cost for the expansion and renovation is $261 million, which will be financed through a combination of public and private funds.

Earlier this month, the New Museum in New York set an opening date for its 60,000-square-foot expansion designed by architecture firm OMA.
