Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has announced a £1.5 billion funding package for UK cultural organisations over a five-year period in response to underfunding over the last decade.

The investment will help save 1,000 local cultural venues in every part of the country, including arts spaces, museums, libraries and heritage buildings.

"At a time when forces seek to divide us, arts, culture and heritage are what bind us together," said Nandy.

Support for venues in every part of UK

"Our local cultural institutions aren’t just buildings — they’re part of who we are as a nation, they help tell our national story, and provide unique opportunities for young people to pursue their dreams," she added.

"This funding will keep the doors open and the lights on at thousands of arts organisations, museums, libraries and heritage buildings that might otherwise have been at real risk of closing.

"It will unlock opportunities for millions of people who have been shut out for far too long. That is the Britain we are rebuilding."

Via a statement, cash will be invested in areas and organisations that need it most and that have been underfunded.

Boost for arts organisations

The package includes more than £100 million for local museums struggling with maintenance backlogs and bills.

This is expected to aid up to 200 sites across the UK.

The £1.5 billion funding package is made up of:

  • £760m for museums; £600m for infrastructure and £160m to be invested in local and regional museums
  • £425m to support around 300 capital projects in arts venues around the country
  • £230m for preserving and protecting heritage buildings
  • £27.5m for public library upgrades
  • £80m capital funding to benefit Arts Council England's National Portfolio organisations.

Darren Henley, chief executive of Arts Council England, said: "This is a big boost for the arts organisations, museums and libraries that are the beating heart of towns and cities across England."
