The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced an opportunity to join the Board of Trustees for ICOM UK.

The organisation is looking for a finance lead trustee to provide robust advice to the Board of Trustees, based on a strategic overview of ICOM UK’s financial position and the conduct of its financial affairs.

ICOM UK invites applications from individuals with strong financial acumen who are dedicated to the museums and heritage industry and enjoy working internationally.

Full details are available in the Trustee Recruitment Pack. Applications close at 10 am on Tuesday, 26 August 2025.

Strategic oversight

The finance lead trustee will work with ICOM UK’s strategic director to guide and advise the Board on its financial duties and responsibilities. The role will include the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements within a financial policy framework.

Additionally, they will help ensure that appropriate financial measures, accounting procedures, and financial policies and controls are in place, as appropriate for the charity and company, and contribute to the Governance & Risk Committee.

ICOM UK uses an independent accountancy company to prepare its annual accounts. The strategic director and administrator support day-to-day financial management, operations and bookkeeping.

As such, the role of finance lead trustee is focused on strategic oversight and requires expertise in financial planning and management. Experience in a charity and/or company is preferred. The successful applicant will also be able to comprehend and communicate the impact of decisions on the organisation’s finances.

Recently, ICOM UK hosted a free online event for students and emerging professionals in the museum and cultural sector, titled So Millennial! Exploring intergenerational interactions in museum workplaces.

In this session, Miranda Stearn, curator at Lancaster Arts, discussed her research exploring intergenerational learning and intergenerational dissonance within the museum and wider cultural workforce as part of a Clore Leadership Fellowship.
