The Chanel Culture Fund aims to expand the brand’s history of cultural engagement.

Shanghai’s Power Station of Art (PSA) has partnered with the Chanel Culture Fund to open two exhibitions in the ‘Art & Craft’ season as part of the ‘Next Cultural Producer’ programme.

Launched last year, the Chanel Culture Fund is a series of initiatives that expand the brand’s history of cultural engagement and support contemporary artists.

Part of the collaboration with Chanel, the ‘Next Cultural Producer’ programme was created to showcase new ideas and emerging movements in craft and architecture in China.

“From the outset we sought to develop a culture fund with a truly global scope, reflecting the diversity of art forms worldwide, so we are delighted to be announcing a new partner in Asia,” said Yana Peel, Chanel’s global head of arts and culture.

“The Power Station of Art in Shanghai is unique as mainland China’s first public contemporary art museum and upholds our shared belief in the central importance of creativity in driving innovation.”

Running until 5 February 2023, the first season, titled ‘Art & Craft’, explores the art of craft in China. The second season, ‘Dynamic Architecture’, opens in summer 2023.

The first season includes two exhibitions, ‘Hill of the Madman’ and ‘Back to the Future: Breaking the Time Barrier’. The former is curated by Feng Lixing and Wu You, and the latter by Zuo Jing and Wang Yanzhi.

“We all know that traditional museums no longer satisfy the younger generation’s imagination or expectation for the future,” said Gong Yan, director of the Power Station of Art.

“This partnership with the Chanel Culture Fund gives PSA the opportunity to reach out to young Chinese artists and audiences and to act as a catalyst that sparks inspiration.”

As well as the Power Station of Art, Chanel has partnered with LA’s Underground Museum, Paris’ Centre Pompidou, the National Portrait Gallery in London and Moscow’s GES-2.
